Description

Come explore the birthplace of Nice's history! Castle Hill is often seen as just a place for a walk. A beautiful panorama, a little history, a few anecdotes… and it's easy to miss the essentials. This tour offers an alternative way to discover the site: a more cultural approach than 'sun, sea, socca, and pan bagnat', far from clichés and overly generic stories, to give depth to this landscape that we think we know. We explore Castle Hill with a historian's perspective, enriched by modern sources and reconstruction tools that bring the past back to life. Where the landscape seems silent today, history takes shape again. During the guided visit, you will discover the origins of the city, the old fortress that no longer exists, the major events that shaped the site, and the traces that are still visible in the landscape. - - - - - - - - - I N F O - - - - - - - - - |> What you will see - A real cultural tour far from the clichés - Panoramas explained historically - Visualization of the Château de Nice as it was - The link between past and present through remains that are still present - Interpretation of the landscape and rediscovery of the old defensive line from a historian's perspective - The strategic importance of such fortifications in local and European history |> See what no longer exists Thanks to 3D reconstructions based on historical sources, the vanished castle and its fortifications take shape again in the current landscape of the hill. Where nothing remains, it becomes possible to understand what once existed. |> A tour to understand differently This experience is for all those who wish to discover Castle Hill at a different pace, taking the time to understand a place rather than simply passing through it. The landscape then becomes a real medium for interpretation: we identify the traces of the past, we understand the transformations of the site, and we connect what we see today to what has disappeared. |> Tour route We start from Place Garibaldi and end at the Bellanda Tower. The distance is 2 km and the duration is around 1 hour 45 minutes. The route begins with a slight climb, then gradually becomes gentler until the summit, before descending back to the Bellanda Tower. |> About me A live guide for almost 20 years and a 3D artist specializing in the reconstruction of historical heritage, I work on the fortifications of the Nice coastline to restore sites that have now disappeared. This tour is a direct extension of this work: bringing together history, heritage, the land, and contemporary tools to make the past understandable. The 3D reconstructions presented during the tour are based on my historical research and created by me.
