Description
The Royal Baroque Route & Salt Roads Train Tour features a historic early 20th-century railway line crossing valleys, mountains, and canyons between France and Italy. This authentic alpine experience includes onboard commentary, guided walking tours, visits to charming villages, and remarkable monuments, complemented by lunch in a traditional restaurant.
The tour departs from the French Riviera and rapidly ascends into the Alpine peaks, bypassing mass tourism. A professional guide provides insights into the railway’s engineering marvels such as viaducts and tunnels.
Two medieval villages are explored, characterized by twisting narrow streets, Baroque heritage, hidden chapels, cathedrals, and monasteries. A private shuttle connects the villages along dramatic mountain roads. Walks through these perched villages reveal their cultural and historical treasures while offering expansive views near Mercantour National Park and the Valley of Wonders.
The tour includes a guided visit to a Franciscan Monastery, which involves a steep climb but may be skipped if preferred. The second village visit varies per day and may involve:
- A visit to a museum dedicated to over 100,000 Bronze Age rock engravings representing alpine heritage
- A short hike featuring additional Baroque monuments and ruins of a medieval castle
Participants can also explore ancient castle ruins linked to French and Italian history, including Napoleonic and WWII eras.
The tour concludes with a return train to Nice at 7:00 PM.
