Description
Begin early at 7:30 am for a full-day journey aboard one of France’s most remarkable train lines, guided by a local expert. The train ride lasts about two hours, offering historical context and scenic views.
The first stop is a medieval city recognized as one of France’s finest. It features a Royal City-Citadel with a historic drawbridge above the river, a majestic citadel overlooking the valley, and a flamboyant baroque cathedral. This fortress city is situated on a natural rock ridge that shaped its history. Note the 150-meter uphill walk to the castle, requiring good physical condition.
Lunch is served at a traditional local restaurant, providing authentic regional cuisine.
The second stop visits a partly troglodyte medieval village with an option for a notable hike. The trail passes giant sandstone blocks resembling a “meteor shower” and rock shelters, including a unique geological site called the “King’s Room.” Walking through old chestnut forests, hikers encounter diverse landscapes along a 4 km short route or an 8 km extended loop, depending on fitness levels. For those opting out of hiking, the village offers a peaceful setting with the option to play pétanque.
This experience offers clean, fresh Alpine air and a variety of landscapes near the French Riviera. The tour is physically demanding and recommended only for those in good shape. The full day runs from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm, with an option to return by train at 4:00 pm unaccompanied, visiting only one village.
